    The Effects of Mind Mapping Activities on Students\u27 Motivation

    We examined how students‟ motivation differed when they participated in three different types of mind mapping activities: one activity that was completed individually outside of class time, one that was completed individually in class with the instructor available for help, and one that was completed in class with other students and the instructor available for help. Using the MUSIC Model of Academic Motivation (Jones, 2009) as a framework, we implemented a concurrent mixed methods design using identical samples whereby the quantitative component was dominant over the qualitative component. Participants included 40 undergraduate students enrolled in an educational psychology course at a U.S. university. After each of the mind mapping activities, study participants completed questionnaires that included open- and closed-ended items. Although the three activities had similar effects on students‟ motivation-related beliefs, some differences were documented in their preferences of mind mapping activities.     Characterizing the metabolic intensity and cardiovascular demands of walking football in Southeast Asian women

    Given that the recent rise in obesity rates throughout Southeast Asia is disproportionately driven by women, part of the regional solution may be to encourage more habitual physical activity within this population. Taking advantage of the regional popularity of walking football, this study sought to characterize the cardiovascular demands and metabolic intensity of Southeast Asian women competing in walking football matches to determine the sports’ suitability for promoting physical health. It was hypothesized that both cardiovascular and metabolic intensity measures (≥65% HR% and ≥3.0 METs, respectively) would meet or exceed established thresholds for improving fitness and health. Methods: Women’s teams from Singapore (Mean±SD: 42±11 yrs age; 29.2±7.0 kg/m2 BMI; n=14) and Malaysia (40±10 yrs age; 32.9±5.7 kg/m2 BMI; n=8) competed in two successive matches within a single day during which measures of heart rate (HR) and GPS (from portable handheld device) were recorded for each player, while relative HR was computed as a percent of each player’s age-predicted maximal HR (HR%, %). The GPS data were later converted to walking distance and metabolic intensity (i.e., metabolic equivalents, or METs). One-sample t-tests at the 0.05 alpha level were used to compare variables to their respective thresholds.     Efficient Methods to Assimilate Satellite Retrievals Based on Information Content

    One of the outstanding problems in data assimilation has been and continues to be how best to utilize satellite data while balancing the tradeoff between accuracy and computational cost. A number of weather prediction centers have recently achieved remarkable success in improving their forecast skill by changing the method by which satellite data are assimilated into the forecast model from the traditional approach of assimilating retrievals to the direct assimilation of radiances in a variational framework. The operational implementation of such a substantial change in methodology involves a great number of technical details, e.g., pertaining to quality control procedures, systematic error correction techniques, and tuning of the statistical parameters in the analysis algorithm. Although there are clear theoretical advantages to the direct radiance assimilation approach, it is not obvious at all to what extent the improvements that have been obtained so far can be attributed to the change in methodology, or to various technical aspects of the implementation. The issue is of interest because retrieval assimilation retains many practical and logistical advantages which may become even more significant in the near future when increasingly high-volume data sources become available. The central question we address here is: how much improvement can we expect from assimilating radiances rather than retrievals, all other things being equal? We compare the two approaches in a simplified one-dimensional theoretical framework, in which problems related to quality control and systematic error correction are conveniently absent. By assuming a perfect radiative transfer model and perfect knowledge of radiance and background error covariances, we are able to formulate a nonlinear local error analysis for each assimilation method. Direct radiance assimilation is optimal in this idealized context, while the traditional method of assimilating retrievals is suboptimal because it ignores the cross-covariances between background errors and retrieval errors. We show that interactive retrieval assimilation (where the same background used for assimilation is also used in the retrieval step) is equivalent to direct assimilation of radiances with suboptimal analysis weights. We illustrate and extend these theoretical arguments with several one-dimensional assimilation experiments, where we estimate vertical atmospheric profiles using simulated data from both the High-resolution InfraRed Sounder 2 (HIRS2) and the future Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS)

    Global-scale proxy system modeling of oxygen isotopes in lacustrine carbonates: 2 new insights from isotope-enabled-model proxy-data comparison

    Proxy System Modelling (PSM) is now recognised as a crucial step in comparing climate model output with proxy records of past environmental change. PSMs filter the climate signal from the model, or from meteorological data, based on the physical, chemical and biological processes of the archive and proxy system under investigation. Here we use a PSM of lake carbonate δ18O to forward model pseudoproxy time-series for every terrestrial grid square in the SPEEDY-IER isotope enabled General Circulation Model (GCM), and compare the results with 31 records of lake δ18O data from the Americas in the NOAA Paleoclimate Database. The model-data comparison shows general patterns of spatial variability in the lake δ18O data are replicated by the combination of SPEEDY-IER and the PSM, with differences largely explained by known biases in the models. The results suggest improved spatial resolution/coverage of climate models and proxy data, respectively, is required for improved data-model comparison, as are increased numbers of higher temporal resolution proxy time series (sub decadal or better) and longer GCM runs. We prove the concept of data-model comparison using isotope enabled GCMs and lake isotope PSMs and outline potential avenues for further work

    Evaporation Rate Study and NDMA Formation from UDMH/NO2 Reaction Products

    Laboratory samples of uns-dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) fuel/oxidizer (nitrogen dioxide) non-combustion reaction products (UFORP) were prepared using a unique permeation tube technology. Also, a synthetic UFORP was prepared from UDMH, N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), dimethylammonium nitrate, sodium nitrite and purified water. The evaporation rate of UFORP and synthetic UFORP was determined under space vacuum (approx 10(exp -3) Torr) at -40 ?C and 0 ?C. The material remaining was analyzed and showed that the UFORP weight and NDMA concentration decreased over time; however, NDMA had not completely evaporated. Over 85% of the weight was removed by subjecting the UFORP to 10(-3) Torr for 7 hours at -40 ?C and 4 hours at 0 ?C. A mixture of dimethylammonium nitrate and sodium nitrite formed NDMA at a rapid rate in a moist air environment. A sample of UFORP residue was analyzed for formation of NDMA under various conditions. It was found that NDMA was not formed unless nitrite was added

    Physicians\u27 use of the personal digital assistant (PDA) in clinical decision making

    Purpose: This study examined how frequently attending physicians and physicians in training used personal digital assistants (PDAs) for patient care and explored physicians\u27 perceptions of the impact of PDA use on several areas of clinical decision making. Setting/Subjects: The 108 participants included 59 attending physicians and 49 physicians in training from teaching hospitals in Tennessee, Florida, Alabama, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania. Methodology: Respondents completed a questionnaire designed to explore PDA use in a clinical setting. Results: Eighty-seven percent of the respondents reported PDA use for patient encounters. Fifty-five percent of respondents reported frequent use, and 32% reported occasional use of a PDA for patient care. Of the frequent PDA users, 85% said PDA use had influenced their overall clinical decision making and 73% mentioned treatment alterations specifically. Approximately 60% of the participants reporting occasional PDA use indicated that the PDA had influenced their overall clinical decision making, while 54% specifically mentioned a change to their patient\u27s treatment plan. Discussion/Conclusion: Attending physicians and physicians in training who used a PDA during patient encounters perceived that even occasional PDA use had an impact on their clinical decision making and treatment choices. Health sciences librarians are perfectly positioned to provide PDA training and assistance not only to physicians who are frequent PDA users, but also to those who are occasional users

    To the Editor—We are writing to express concerns regarding facts reported in 2 recent Journal of Infectious Diseases articles pertaining to the ANRSLIGHT study, conducted in 18 clinical sites in France between September 2013 and May 2015. Initially, we were delighted to see the authors implemented several inclusion criteria that we believe were likely to ensure safety of participants during the analytical treatment interruption (ATI) that occurred during the trial, for example a nadir of CD4+ T-cell count of ≥300 cells/mm3 and an initial CD4+ T-cell count of ≥600/mm3. However, other aspects are dismaying, including the detailed identifying information about the index participant and partner. We fear it is possible to identify both persons from the elaborate medical and nonmedical history provided. After contacting the study Principal Investigator, Dr Lelièvre, through a European colleague, it appears there were no consents to disclose this information. Thus, we feel strongly that it was inappropriate to include such comprehensive, potentially identifying details
